That Was Then This Is Now S E Hinton Books

And that would be that life always changes.

Susan Hinton’s follow-up to “The Outsiders” is another wonderful young-adult novel.
The scenario is much the same...mid-teens on the ‘other side’ of town growing up and finding themselves with ambiguous friends, cohorts and predicaments.
Non-stop action keeps the pages rolling...did Bryon make the right decision? How might one continue this narrative?

Originally published in 1971, the storyline of life’s unpredictability and fickleness remains the same today...no matter one’s age.

That Was Then This Is Now S E Hinton Books Reviews

I downloaded this e-book from to my Fire. The Author S.E. Hinton did an excellent job writing this e-book. This e-book is written in the first person. The simple approach to the story was a good idea. The Author focused more on the character development and the characters emotions and feelings rather than creating and building scenes to get the story out. Good job on the first and second spark stating the main point of the story. The emotional connection with the characters is what drew me into the story. This is a simply written timeless story of the struggle for survival starting at a young age. The formatting of the e-book was good. I have and would recommend this book to a friend.
Another great one from SE Hinton. The mood and style are felt throughout. And a closeness with the characters. I'm no good at going into details such as a book report. Read this and all of these books. Read every book you can. Thanks for creating such good reading SE Hinton.
I really enjoy Ms. Hinton's few books. I sure wish she had written a lot more of them in this venue. She has a wonderful grasp of what it is to be young and not always excepted. Her dialogue is amazing and her prose just flows along like a deep river carrying the reader with it. Good for young people struggling and a good way I would think in getting them interested in reading in general. I highly recommend them all.
Great book. Also, for some reason it's never played on cable or any network to my knowledge, the movie is great too.
So true it is based on our life experiences and maybe some luck or lack of, some of us grow up and some take more time to do so. This book nails that experience. I struggle sometimes because I grew up and envy those of my childhood friends that are very much the same people I knew when a teenager.
Whether or not that's a good thing is the focus of this book which which tackles life's questions without apology and complete honest. Read this book. It relates to us all.
"That was Then, This is Now" centers around the lives of four adolescents. There is the narrator, Byron Douglas, a handsome charming but ultimately selfish and self-absorbed teenager. There is Mark, whom Byron's mother adopted for her own and who is Byron's best friend. Mark's penchant for mischief is too often offset by his winning smile, and he maintains a fierce loyalty to his friends. The two minor but equally important characters are Cathy, a precocious young woman who falls in love with Byron, and her younger brother M&M, a sensitive and soulful hippie wannabe.

The book moves in different actions so that it seems we're reading two novels about two brothers and best friends. In the first novel, Mark and Byron are always by each other's side, and together they witness the fearsome murder of their good friend Charlie, which scars both. In the second novel, there's a love triangle -- Byron has fallen deeply in love with Cathy, and Mark feels abandoned. The novel comes to a climax when Byron commits an act that will forever severe his relationship with both Mark and Cathy.

Like in "The Outsiders", SE Hinton has a gift for understanding and speaking the language of troubled adolescent boys, making us think she is in fact one herself. And the writing is pristine and polished, as always. But the characters are far less compelling than the ones we were entranced by in "The Outsiders," and the plot far more fragile and broken.

Still, many a teenager will find "That was Then, This is Now" speaks to them in the most haunting manner possible.
Everyone should read S.E. Hinton's for core novels, The Outsiders, That Was Then This Is Now, Tex, and Rumble Fish. Out of the four novels this is probably her weakest. You can sense her struggling with this novel, as she was suffering from terrible writer's block during this period. However, this is still an excellent novel despite having some elements that are slightly outdated. It is still worth reading.
And that would be that life always changes.
