This series has been very interesting. After i finished this book i was immediately seeking the next. I am a fan of Jean Johnson and have enjoyed every book she has written. My favorite series is the "Sons of Destiny" and just wish all of her books were in audio but especially this series. This series contains many well developed characters, magic involved, and the place or setting well described. If you like some fantasy, magic, romance, you will like this book and the whole series.

Dawn of the Flame Sea Flame Seas Book 1 eBook Jean Johnson Reviews

Good read,but too short.
this is a great foundation story to Ms Johnson's novella "Birthright". A basis is established, and will be built on in further stories. I'm waiting!
Jean Johnson is one of the best writers to come down the pike in recent years.
Crafting a people that are different and yet human, with a very moral sense of values and mystical attributes. Can't put it down.Great read.
I have read and enjoyed previous books by Jean Johnson. They include the SONS OF DESTINY series, which I would describe as Romance with fantasy/magic, and the THEIRS NOT TO REASON WHY series, which I would describe as science fiction; both were enjoyable, though the former were, IMO, more lightweight.

DAWN OF THE FLAME SEA is a bit harder to categorize and I had mixed feelings about it. The basic premise is that a handful of powerful, magic-wielding Fae, lead by Jintaya, a Fae woman who is a nonviolent healer, along with Ban, a non-Fae long-lived, seemingly human warrior who's Jintaya's bodyguard, travel by an interdimensional gate to a Bronze-Age-with-magic world, where they plan to observe the natives and with whom they eventually will begin to develop trade relations. Their plan goes awry almost instantly, when they are observed by one of the natives and their arrival cannot be concealed from the local tribe. (This is not really a spoiler because this occurs in the first chapter.) What follows is the story of the next 17 years, as the Fae and the locals create their new community.

The world-building in DAWN OF THE FLAME SEA is detailed and complex and fascinating ... however, the overall story, for me, was interesting but not particularly satisfying emotionally.

***SOME SPOILERS FOLLOW***

The relationship between Jintaya and Ban had the potential to be complex and nuanced and quite moving (Ban's backstory is unusual and, like the world-building, creative) but in the 17-year span covered in the book it never really develops much. And during those years, the Fae and the native population have casual sex (not graphically depicted) and many half-breed children are born to both Fae and humans. None of those relationships are explored in any depth, nor really experienced in depth, they're casual couplings for pleasure that, despite magical contraceptives, lead to repeated pregnancies. Not relationships, just children. And the Fae give the ones they bear to the humans to raise. There's almost nothing in the book about the children who are born from these encounters. And the impersonal, largely meaningless casual sexual encounters simply for momentary pleasure, presented with no particular details made it pretty meaningless for me, the reader, as well. I didn't want detailed, descriptions of graphic sex (I appreciated *not* finding the almost mandatory pages and pages of sex that's commonly found nowadays) but I needed more emotional connection -- depths of friendship, at least, if not love -- to draw me into the story, and it just wasn't there.

I think, for me, that's the weakness that ultimately made this book less than satisfying There's no emotional depth to the story. You never see much beyond the surface of *any* relationship -- not the Fae to the other Fae, not Jintaya and Ban, not between Fae and humans or humans and their half-breed children.

I think another weakness to the story was that it covered so much time. From chapter to chapter, there might be the passage of a day or multiple years. It made the story more impersonal and less compelling.

*** END SPOILERS ***

Bottom line While Ms. Johnson has created a detailed world and a story with a lot of potential, the execution is less satisfying than it should be because of the lack of development of the relationships. Intriguing, creative world-building alone, for me, is not enough.

I rate this as three stars because the writing is decent enough, if not with much emotional depth, and the world-building was interesting. Perhaps others, who are looking for a story less about the relationships of the characters, will find this more satisfying than I did. Hopefully, I've expressed my thoughts well enough to help other readers decide for themselves if this book will be their cuppa tea.
Jean Johnson catches your attention at the beginning of each of her books. I have most of her books, (98%), have enjoyed all. This story is interesting and enjoyable. It does leave you hanging wondering what next, that might be what it is supposed to do. I am not too fond of a serial story. Her books usually do stand alone. I will continue to wait and read the next, I am hooked.
Jean Johnson is introducing us to the origins of the Flame Seas in this novella, a world she first brought to us in her short story Birthright. This is a gently-paced unfolding of personalities, places and customs, and holds a lot of promise as the story continues in the next two books. I can see some hints of connection with her "Destiny" universe and look forward to seeing how these different worlds might intersect in subsequent novellas.
