Bad Thoughts Five Star Mystery Series Five Star Mystery Series Dave Zeltserman Books
Detective Bill Shannon is still coping with the memory of seeing his mother murdered over twenty years ago. Every year around the anniversary of her death, he loses time and disappears for a week or more, awakening disheveled and completely unaware of what has occurred, OR what he DID during his blackout. Now women are being killed in the same grisly manner as Shannon's mother. Did Shannon have something to do with the murders, or is he being framed by a killer from his past?
The parts of this book that were standard police procedural were great. I loved Shannon's relationship with his partner, DiGrazio. (Um, do I need to say we're talking "working relationship," not, well, you know...) They did a fine job of playing good cop/bad cop. (Here again - at work, people.) It was lookin' like a 5-star read.
BUT THEN...
As the philosopher Olivia Newton John once said, "Let's Get Physical" - metaphysical, that is!
I can't really say anything else without giving too much away,
BUT GROAN!
This is a gripping read. The murders are gruesome and plentiful. The killer is creepy and disgusting. The suspense builds and keeps you turning those pages long after you need to stop reading and start making dinner.
If Zeltserman had stayed firmly rooted in reality, I would have been a happy camper. Next time, please leave the paranormal mumbo jumbo to the teen romances and Shirley MacLaine.

Bad Thoughts Five Star Mystery Series Five Star Mystery Series Dave Zeltserman Books Reviews
OMG, I read this book years ago and still can get it out of my head. It's a well written book. My son was finally old enough to read it, so I told him to read it. He enjoyed it as well.
Went between too out there and just right. The book kept you in the edge of your seat. I have issues with unbelievable plots but this book made you think it could be possible. Isn't that what great writing is all about?
I always judge a book by whether I stay up too late reading it, and this one kept me up, and coming back for more. Characters were well developed, and the storyline was intriguing.
Only two major grammar mistakes (a real problem with E-books, traditional editors apparently aren't bothered with) - good story, keep my interest, and the twist at the end wasn't seen coming.
Recommended!
PS Dave Z - "dam" and "damn" are two different words with different meanings, but spell checker will give both a pass.
Hmmmm, this is a great piece of hard boiled writing situated around a sort of silly premise. Its too bad.
Given Zeltserman's history of creating likeable dreggs of humanity characters, you are unsure exactly what is happening here. Is Bill Shannon behind a spat of horrific recent murders or is some Dean Koontz style mystic force behind them and setting Shannon up for the fall?
Im not giving away anything by saying that Zeltserman injects a comic book style bad guy into this story who has the ability to wander through other peoples thoughts. You will find this out pretty early on in the book. What makes this story worth reading regardless, is that you want to know what will happen. The writing is good enough to 'almost' make the evil doer worthy of Zeltsermans narrative gift.
I would say, DONT START with this Zeltserman book. It is his least well put together story. Its a good attempt at breaking the mould he was setting up for himself. And your unsure how the story will resolve itself til the end. (which is saying something). I hope that Zeltserman continues to try to break his restraints and would not mind seeing him come back into the mystic realm for another try at this. Just not his finest work thus far.
Seriously?? An out of body psycho killer putting suggestions in people's heads via their dreams?? I never doubted it for a second. What would normally seem so unbelievable actually had me on the edge of my seat waiting for them to figure it out and catch this guy in the act. While the author initially put doubt in my head about the main character, I still found myself rooting for him. The murders were sick and twisted, but I was not revolted by them because I was so into trying to figure out "who done it?"
This is a good example of really flawed book that keeps bending and twisting to keep your attention on the page despite its shortcomings. BAD THOUGHTS is melodramatic and has a plot worthy of airport paperbacks, but it's dynamic and unpredictable. It's what book you keep reading to know what-the-hell-is-going-to-happen-next?
Bill Shannon is equal parts cliché and original details. Loved that he's straight, hardass cop that is often maligned in that kind of stories. Love the detail about his fingers and how he doesn't shun therapy by any means necessary. Sure he's a taciturn cop having nightmares all the time, but those original details about him keep him from getting boring. Like many other reviewer said, quick, pleasant page-turner.
